De actie is weer terug! Ik heb vannacht in de gevangenis doorgebracht. Natuurlijk heb ik niks gedaan. Ik ben onschuldig! En vanochtend mocht ik weer gaan. Tot 1993 hielden ze hier echte criminelen vast. Hierna waren ze van mening dat (sommige) backpackers tot de zelfde categorie behoren en hebben ze het omgedoopt tot hostel. Ach ja, liever Napier Prison dan Bangkok Hilton.
In Hicks Bay (zes huizen en een schuur) was een vissersboot op de klippen gelopen. De boot viel niet meer te redden en de dorpelingen besloten het wrak op het strand te verbranden.
"Hello! We zagen je net arriveren. Where are you from? Je verblijft bij Jo, toch? We gaan een jacht vellen. Wil je een lift? Oh en we hebben nog een fotograaf nodig. Kun je wat foto's maken voor de krant van morgen?"
En zo vond ik de volgende dag mijn foto in 'The Gisborne Herald'! De foto vind je als attachment, het artikel onderaan deze mail.
Via het gehuchtje Morere bevind ik me nu dus in Napier. Hier verlaat ik de kust en ga op weg naar Tongariro National Park en Taranaki National Park. Volgens de Maori legendes stonden de vulkanen Tongariro en Taranaki ooit zij aan zij. Maar na een geweldige ruzie nam Taranaki de benen en staat hij nu een paar honderd kilometer verderop.
Op 30 maart parkeer ik mijn autootje op de veerboot en begint onze tocht op het Zuider Eiland. Ik vind het ongelofelijk hoe snel de tijd nu gaat. Ik en al weer anderhalve maand in New Zealand! Gelukkig nog 2 1/2 te gaan.

Burning of yacht a sad end to 100-year history Over 100 years of maritime history ended when a damaged kauri-hulled yacht was reduced to a pile of ashes on the beach at Hicks Bay yesterday. Community spokesman Joe McClutchie said it was a sad end, but a decision that had to be made over the reality facing local efforts to move the vessel. Members of the community had managed to pull the 25 foot motor launch out of the sea and onto the high tideline after she struck rocks off East Cape last week. With a change of weather forecast, rising swells, no suitable machinery to move the Terry Joy to higher ground, and the final straw, people stripping and taking items from the stranded vessel in the owner's absence, a decision was made to burn the yacht on the high water mark. Elder Rua Fox gave a short karakia/prayer for the soul of the Terry Joy. With two hours left of the incoming tide, the 101-year-old kauri motor launch was prepared for burning. "It was not an easy task, but during its last ordeal a rainbow stayed over the scene which was a good omen for those involved," said Mr McClutchie. Within a couple of hours the old vessel was reduced to a small, tidy heap of rubble, allowing the final clean up to have a minimal affect on the environment. The Northland owner, known only as "Dooley", was notified later. He could not be contacted but Mr McClutchie said the man was saddened by the fact that nothing was recovered to help with costs. Mr McClutchie said the man was supportive of the call made on the spot, facing the reality of the factors against salvage. The man aknowledged Trevor Burrows, of Martins Hiremaster, and Henry Green, of Green Contractors, for the offer of equipment and services following earlier articles in The Herald. He also thanked those Hicks Bay locals who had stayed with the task to the end, particularly Mr McClutchie, his wife Marilyn and Rua Fox for having to face the final decision.
