G'day Mate!
Voor het eerst sinds mijn aankomst hier in Australia, wordt de strak blauwe lucht afgewisseld met witte wolkjes. Dit is een prettige afwisseling. Voor het eerst in mijn leven, is de achterkant van mijn oren verbrand. Het is geweldig hier en ik heb nu - na pas een week vakantie - al het idee dat de tijd die ik hier heb veel te weinig gaat zijn.
Ik ben aangekomen in Exmouth en voor het eerst sinds mijn vertrek uit Perth heb ik een dag voor mezelf. Vandaag zal worden besteed aan het nuttigen van een koffie en een muffin in het winkelcentrum, het lezen van mijn e-mail en aan het lezen van mijn boek aan de rand van het zwembad.
De oppervlakte van West Australië is gelijk aan de helft van Europa, maar wordt slechts bewoond door 2 miljoen, waarvan 1,5 miljoen in Perth. Exmouth is met 2000 inwoners de grootste plaats binnen een straal van 1000 km. Exmouth is tropisch, de aarde is zo rood als een kreeft en door de straten lopen emoes en hoppen kangaroes.
Een week geleden vertrok mijn toerbus in noordelijke richting. Vanaf dag 1 heb ik voor in de bus op de bijrijdersstoel gezeten met het best mogelijke uitzicht op Outback Australia.
Probeer jezelf een voorstelling te maken van een typisch Australian bloke (bijvoorbeeld Steve Irving) en je hebt een goed beeld van onze gids/chauffeur. "No worries mate! We'll arrive nice and early, so we'll have plenty of time to crack a can or two (bier, red.) and have all t world problems solved before starting the barbie (bbq, red.)".
In de afgelopen week heb ik behalve 2000 km asvalt ook mooie stranden, droge rivieren, km-ers vergezichten, nationale parken en hoppende kangaroes gezien. De nachten hebben we geslapen aan het strand of onder de blote hemel bij een kampvuur. Ik ga geen poging doen om de sterrenpracht te omschrijven. Er bestaan geen woorden die de nachtelijke hemel voldoende recht doen. Angst voor slangen en spinnen ben ik helemaal kwijt. Er is er nog geen in mijn slaapzak gekropen. Nu m'n angst voor haaien nog...
Gisteren heb ik de eerste duiken gemaakt (en nog geen haai gezien). Het Great Barrier Reef ten oosten van Australië is het grootste rif ter wereld. Hier in West Australië bevindt zich het op één na grootste rif ter wereld: het Ningaloo Reef. Alle vis die ik twee jaar geleden in het Great Barrier Reef heb gezien, zit hier ook. Het is alsof ik zwem door mijn eigen fotoboek. Na de eerste dag duiken ben ik zo enthousiast dat ik besloten heb om hier niet één, maar twee weken te blijven.

G'day Mate!
For the first time since I've been here, the always so perfectly blue sky, now shows a couple of small white clouds. This feels very nice (for a day or so). For the first time in my live I sunburned the backside of my ears. I'm having a wonderful time up here and now - even after just a week of holiday - I get the feeling that my holiday won't be long enough.
I've arrived in Exmouth and this is the first day in which I have time for myself. Plans for today are enjoying a coffee and muffin in town, reading my email and reading a book at the pool.
The size of Western Australia is equal to halve of Europe, with only 2 mln people living here (of which 1,5 mln in Perth). Exmouth has 2000 people and is the largest town you'll find within a 1000 km radius. Exmouth is tropical, the soil is brightred and in town you'll come across emu's and hopping kangaroos.
A week ago my tourbus left heading north. As of day one, the seat next to the driver was mine. For the whole trip, I had the best possible view over Outback Australia. Try to visalize a typical Australian bloke (Steve Irving e.g.) and you'll have a perfect picture of our guide/driver. "No worries mate! We'll arrive nice and early, so we'll have plenty of time to crack a can or two (beer, red.) and have all t world problems solved before starting the barbie (bbq, red.)".
In the last week I saw - besides 2000 km of asfalt - beautiful beaches, dry rivers, km of wastland, national parks and hopping kangaroos. I slept close to the beach and on sheep stations underneath the stars. I'm not even trying to give a discription of the nightly sky. There are just no words which'll do justice. I lost my fear for snakes and spicers. I haven't found any of them in my sleeping bag. The only fear I have to get rid of is the one for sharks...
Yesterday was my first day of diving (did not see a shark just yet). The Great Barrier Reef at the eastcoast of Australia is largest reef in the world. Here on the Western coast you'll find the second largest reef in the world: the Ningaloo Reef. All the fish I saw at the Great Barrier Reef, two years ago, are here as well. It's a big trip down through memory lane. After the first day of diving I'm so excited that I decided to stay here one week more.
